I’m honestly shocked that ESPN’s College GameDay won’t be in Ann Arbor for theMichigan State @ Michigan game this weekend. Probably fair to assume that ESPN has no plans to send Herbstreit, Corso and the gang to a Big Ten game this year (we’ll have more on this in an upcoming post). T&C is 1-0 in our Picks of the Week. Boise State was the better team on Saturday night, but as we suspected 18 was too many points to give a competent Pac10 opponent.
› I think Jacory Harris just threw another interception. But seriously, if Harris can settle into a groove on the road, the Hurricanes are not a team I’d want to see on my schedule. They have a killer defense and excellent talent at skill positions on offense. We’ll surely learn more about Miami next week when they take on Clemson.
›Denard Robinson had an impressive game quarter against Bowling Green. Once again, the national media has anointed another Michigan quarterback Heisman and Rich Rod savior in September (see: 2009, Tate Forcier). With how bad the Wolverine defense is this season we’ll have to wait for a few games against better teams to see if Robinson is durable enough to carry the whole team. Michigan has Indiana this weekend and unfortunately, that doesn’t qualify as “better teams”.
›The Alabama Fightin’ Sabans proved that they are still the real deal against Arkansas. They walked right into the den of one of the best SEC teams and showed excellent poise.
›I’m sold on the Luck/Harbaugh combo at Stanford, but I’m not sold on Notre Dame needing to recapture the luck of the Irish. The team has too much talent to look as bad as it has the last three weeks. Looking forward to some more manageable games , we’ll see if Brian Kelly is in over his head. Two lines that jump off the page at me, Stanford is getting +7.5 at Oregon this weekend and ND is favored by -2.5 at Boston College.
›I’m not big on the BCS v. Playoffs conversation. The system isn’t perfect, but at the same time the purpose of a college football season isn’t to crown a national champion. My biggest issue is the cupcake schedules teams are forced to take on to give themselves the best chance of making a BCS game. I’m talking to you Oregon and Georgia.
›Have you seen Cam Newton at Auburn? Might was to make it a point to catch a game soon – he tore up South Carolina’s defense last weekend.
›UCLA kept Rick Neuheisel’s career alive last weekend with a road victory over Texas. A big win for the Pac10, but I’m thinking this was more due to Texas’ shortcomings than UCLA’s successes.
›No team has a more favorable matchup this weekend than Purdue. They have a bye this week. Hopefully they’ll heal up as they have lost their best receiver and tailback, plus the team is waiting for starting quarterback, Robert Marve’s, MRI results from a bad knee. If the trio is out long term, Danny Hope is going to need to up the game-planning.
›I think Oregon is a really good football team, but what we really learned the last few weeks from Arizona State – is that the Sun Devils are a darn good football teams. They have pushed two teams – Oregon and Wisconsin – to the wire the last two weeks.
›Speaking of the Badgers, they are next on the slate for Michigan State. My gut feeling is that the Spartans will struggle against Wisconsin, but the game will come down to Wisconsin’s ability to stop MSU’s running attack and MSU’s ability to stop anything.
›Looking forward to a great Big XII matchup this thursday night between Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are at home and favored by -3.5 early. We’ll have a Thursday Night Pick for this one later in the week.
